Serious injuries were reported in a Riverside car accident the morning of July 30, 2010, The Press-Enterprise reports. The injury collision happened at the intersection of Terrace Drive and Park Avenue in San Jacinto, when a Chevy sedan and Kia sedan collided. The crash occurred as the Kia, driven by a 42-year-old woman, was attempting a left turn at the intersection. The woman sustained major injuries in the crash. The 29-year-old male driver of the Chevy sedan and his 6-year-old son also suffered injuries and were transported to an area hospital. An investigation is ongoing.

I sympathize with the injured victims of this car crash. I wish them all the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep them in your prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

In Riverside County, 220 fatalities and 8,561 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents, according to the California Highway Patrol’s 2008 traffic accident statistics. In San Jacinto, two people died and 127 were injured as a result of car accidents in 2008.

Yielding Right-of-Way

According to California Vehicle Code section 21800 (a): "The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle which has entered the intersection from a different highway." Based on this news report, it appears officials are still looking into which one of the vehicles had the right-of-way at the intersection at the time of the collision. I trust they are also looking into whether one of the drivers ran a red light at the intersection.

Claim for Compensation

If the female driver of the Kia is determined to have been at fault, then, she could be held liable for the accident and injuries caused to the driver of the Chevy and his young son. If it is determined at the outcome of the investigation that she had the right-of-way, then, the driver of the Chevy can be held liable for the injuries and damages sustained by the female driver. In such cases, injured victims and their families would be well-advised to consult with a reputed Riverside personal injury lawyer, who will give them more information about how to pursue their legal rights.
