Officials in Orange County have identified the man who sustained critical injuries in a Garden Grove car accident the night of January 22, 2010 as 34-year-old Tung Hoang. A news article in the Garden Grove Journal states that Hoang was attempting to cross Ward Street near the intersection of Bolsa Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle driven by 21-year-old Nguyen Vu. Hoang was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Vu was traveling north on Ward when the collision occurred. Police are investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a part. They are also seeking eyewitnesses to this incident. If you have information, please contact the Garden Grove Police Department at 714-741-5823.
I sympathize with the injured victim, Tung Hoang, and his family. Any time there are critical injuries in a car or pedestrian accident, not only the victim but his or her entire family is affected. It is both an emotional and a financial strain on families. I wish Hoang the very best for a quick and complete recovery. Please keep Hoang and his family in your prayers.
Pedestrian Accidents
There were no fatalities, but 49 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in the city of Garden Grove, according to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). Countywide, 41 fatalities and 726 injuries were reported as a result of pedestrian accidents in 2007.
Accident Causes and Liability Issues
Based on this newspaper report, we do not know whether Hoang was crossing Ward Street in a crosswalk. If he was in a crosswalk, then the driver could be held responsible for not yielding right-of-way to the pedestrian. Officials are also still looking into whether drugs or alcohol played a part in this accident. I trust they are also looking into whether the driver, Vu, was negligent. If Vu is determined to be at fault for this accident, he could be held liable for the accident and Hoang's injuries.
In such cases, injured victims could seek compensation to cover medical expenses, lost earnings, cost of hospitalization, physical therapy, rehabilitation and even long-term care, if the injuries are catastrophic. An experienced Orange County personal injury lawyer will be able to advise victims and their families in such cases, and make sure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
