Nine Injured in SUV Rollover Accident

Nine people were injured in a Los Angeles car accident after the driver of a Toyota Sequoia SUV lost control and crashed on the 210 Freeway. The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports that the rollover accident happened the evening of January 9, 2010 on the eastbound 210 Freeway in Irwindale when the driver lost control of the Toyota and the SUV overturned going about 30 feet down an embankment. Most critically injured in this accident was a 40-year-old man who was apparently ejected. Officials say he was a front seat passenger who wasn't wearing his seatbelt.

Two babies, two children and four other adults were also taken to a local hospital. They sustained moderate injuries. California Highway Patrol officials say the driver may have lost control of the SUV because another vehicle made a sudden lane change in front of her. An investigation is still ongoing.

I hope and pray that the critically injured victim makes a quick and complete recovery from his injuries. I also wish the other injured victims for a speedy and full recovery from their injuries. These injured victims will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Rollover Accidents

There are approximately 10,000 rollover accident fatalities in the United States each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That number accounts for about 25 percent of all traffic accident deaths in the United States each year. SUVs are generally more prone to overturning in the event of a crash because of their high center of gravity and narrow track width.

What Caused the Accident?

It's not clear exactly what caused this rollover accident. The driver of the SUV apparently told police that another driver made an unsafe lane change in front of her causing her to lose control of the Toyota. If I were one of the victims, I would preserve the vehicle so it can be carefully examined for any evidence of product defects, design defects and other malfunctions. I would also want to examine whether the critically injured victim was ejected because of a seat restraint system failure.

If this car accident was caused by another negligent driver who cut off the SUV or made an unsafe lane change in front of the SUV, that driver could be held liable as well. It could even be considered a "non-contact hit-and-run" where a driver may have caused the accident without actually being involved in the collision. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer will be able to guide injured victims through what can be a complex legal process of recovering compensation and also help them protect their legal rights.
