A Los Angeles car accident involving three vehicles occurred on March 16, 2010, seriously injuring a motorcyclist, according to a report in the Whittier Daily News. A 20-year-old female driver of a Toyota Camry was traveling in the northbound lanes of the 605 Freeway, near Whittier Boulevard, and came up against slowing traffic.
California Highway Patrol officials said the driver attempted to avoid a collision, swerved and the vehicle hit the center divider of the freeway. The Toyota then ricocheted into traffic lanes and in front of an approaching motorcycle. The rider, identified only as a Bellflower man in his 30s, was thrown from his bike that collided with a Honda Civic. The motorcycle rider suffered serious injuries including a broken left leg and multiple lacerations. The accident is still under investigation and no citations have yet been issued.
My thoughts and prayers are with this severely injured victim and his family. I sincerely hope that he will recover quickly and heal completely from this horrific multi-vehicle accident.

In Whittier, there were no fatalities, but an estimated 19 motorcycle accident-related injuries occurred in 2008, according to California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). Countywide, in 2008, motorcycle crashes led to 114 deaths and 2,934 injuries.
Based on the details of this news account, the Toyota driver seems to have triggered the accident when she did not slow down in time. I trust officials are looking into how fast she was going at the time. It appears she must have been traveling at a speed that was more than what was safe for the traffic conditions. According to California Vehicle Code Section 22350 "no person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.
