Fatal Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Car Accident

A man was killed in a Los Angeles car accident after he was hit by a vehicle at a street intersection in Gardena. According to a news report in the Daily Breeze, the fatal pedestrian accident happened the evening of February 11, 2010 at the intersection of Rosecrans and Purche avenues. Police say the man was left injured and lying on the street. The hit-and-run driver is believed to have been driving a light-colored pickup or SUV. The suspect vehicle possibly has front-end damage. If you saw this accident or know anything about the suspect or hit-and-run vehicle, please call Gardena police officials at 310-217-6135.

My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved this victim. I offer my deepest sympathies and prayers to his family and friends.

Pedestrian Accidents

There was one fatality and 31 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in Gardena, according to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). Countywide, 210 deaths and 5,095 injuries were reported as a result of pedestrian accidents during the same year.

Leaving the Scene of an Accident

I trust police will soon be able to apprehend the hit-and-run driver and bring him or her to justice. Leaving the scene of an accident is a serious crime under California law. According to California Vehicle Code section 20001: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident." Had this driver at least obtained immediate medical attention for the victim, he may have lived. However, this hit-and-run driver decided to leave the injured victim on the street and drive away.

If I were a member of the victim's family, I would be talking to a reputed Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who has a successful track record dealing with hit-and-run and negligent drivers. A knowledgeable lawyer will be able to advise them about their legal rights and options, and also how their car insurance policy would apply to a hit-and-run incident and cases where the negligent driver lacks insurance or does not have sufficient insurance.
