A 6-year-old boy sustained injuries in a Costa Mesa car accident after he was struck by a vehicle the evening of March 17, 2010. The Orange County Register reports that the accident happened in the 900 block of Mission Drive when the boy was hit by a 1996 Chevy Tahoe. On arrival, emergency personnel found the boy bleeding from the head. He also suffered a fractured leg. The boy was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.

I hope this child has not been seriously injured in this collision. I hope and pray that he recovers quickly and completely from his injuries.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

There were no fatalities, but 60 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in Costa Mesa, according to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). Countywide, pedestrian accidents claimed 31 lives and injured 785 people in 2008.

Causes and Liability Issues

Based on this news report, it is not clear how this accident occurred. Whose fault was this accident? Did the child run out into the street and into the path of the oncoming vehicle? Did the driver have sufficient time to stop or was he or she speeding at the time? Where exactly was the child walking at the time of the collision? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine how this injury accident occurred.

In such cases, victims or their families would be well-advised to seek the counsel of an experienced Costa Mesa personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and make sure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. Victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, hospitalization costs, rehabilitation expenses, and even the cost of long-term care if the injuries are catastrophic in nature. If a dangerous roadway condition caused or contributed tot his accident, the city can also be held liable. Any claim against a governmental agency must be properly filed within 180 days of the accident or injury.
