A Los Angeles car accident left two young children with serious injuries the morning of December 9, 2009 after they were struck by a vehicle while walking across the street. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the injury crash occurred in the 7600 block of Corbin Avenue in Reseda. Both children were hurt seriously, but are said to be in stable condition. The driver left the scene of the accident. Authorities are looking for the suspect vehicle and the hit-and-run driver.

I sympathize with the injured children and their families. I hope and pray that they did not suffer catastrophic injuries in this collision and that they have a speedy and full recovery. Please keep these children and their families in your prayers.

Los Angeles Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 90 deaths and 2,690 injuries involving pedestrian accident cases in the city of Los Angeles. Countywide, 210 died and 5,095 were injured as a result of pedestrian accidents in 2007. Also, in Los Angeles County, 712 deaths and 56,475 injuries occurred during the same year as a result of car accidents.

It's hard to imagine that a driver could hit two little children with his vehicle and then leave the scene, knowing that these two children have been seriously injured. This is not only immoral and irresponsible, but also criminal in the state of California. According to California Vehicle Code section 20001: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident." After an accident, a motorist is required to remain at the scene and assist the injured parties and exchange information such as insurance and identification.

Car Accident Liability Issues

This news report does not clearly say where exactly the children were walking at the time of the accident. Were they walking in a crosswalk or at an intersection? What caused the driver to strike the children? Why was the driver not able to see the children ahead of his vehicle? Was the driver impaired, reckless, speeding or otherwise negligent? The family (or families) of these children would be well-advised to contact reputed Los Angeles personal injury attorneys, who will protect their rights and make sure that they are fairly compensated for the serious injuries and damages suffered.
