Jonathan Vazquez, a 4-year-old boy was fatally injured in a car accident after he was hit by a vehicle outside a school, CBS News reports. The fatal hit-and-run car accident occurred the morning of November 30, 2009 when Jonathan was struck outside Smythe Academy in Sacramento. The driver dragged the little boy several feet before he fell off and the driver fled the scene. Jonathan was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after the accident.

Police are describing the hit-and-run vehicle as a Nissan Maxima, 1995 to 1997 model years, with tinted windows. They have a very vague description of the suspect who is said to have been a man in his 40s with a dark complexion. Family Stricken by Tragedy

My sincere hope is that police catch up with this hit-and-run driver. I trust he will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I offer my deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Jonathan's parents, family members and friends. What a devastating blow for them! Please keep this grieving family in your prayers.

Hit-and-run is a serious crime in California. The state's Vehicle Code section 20001 states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident."

Car Accident Liability Issues

In any car accident, which is caused as a result of negligence on someone else's part, a seriously injured victim or the family members of a deceased accident victim may be able to seek compensation for medical expenses or wrongful death. It is of course, very difficult for someone going through such a tough time to even think about retaining an attorney. However, consulting with an experienced California personal injury lawyer will not only make sure their rights are protected, but could also help them find answers to questions they may have about this case.

A knowledgeable attorney should look into whether there were any dangerous conditions outside the school that may have caused or contributed to this tragedy. If there was a dangerous condition that contributed to Jonathan's death, that needs to be fixed immediately so other children are not injured.
