Nineteen passengers in a county MTA bus were injured in a Los Angeles car accident after the bus driver lost control and slammed into another vehicle on Glendale Boulevard near the 2 Freeway in Silver Lake. The Los Angeles Times reports that the crash occurred the evening of November 6, 2009. Ten passengers and the bus driver were taken to an area hospital with injuries. One of those individuals sustained critical injuries. Nine others suffered relatively minor injuries. The injury crash occurred when the driver of the MTA bus lost control and struck the center divider before hitting the car. The occupants of the car were uninjured, Los Angeles fire officials said.
I sympathize with the bus passenger who suffered the most serious injuries in this bus accident. I wish this victim the very best for a speedy and full recovery from his or her injuries. I also hope that the other passengers did not sustain any serious injuries. They will be in my prayers.
Car Accidents in Los Angeles
Car accidents accounted for 260 fatalities and 27,110 injuries in the city of Los Angeles in 2007, the California Highway Patrol reports. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 712 people died and 56,475 sustained injuries as a result of car accidents in 2007.
It would be interesting to find out what caused the bus driver to lose control of his vehicle. Did he suffer a medical condition? Did the bus malfunction, for instance, did the brakes fail? Was the malfunction caused by lack of proper vehicle maintenance? Was the bus driver distracted in some way? Was he impaired at the time? Did any type of negligence play a part in this accident?
Liability Issues in bus accidents
In cases where a bus driver's negligence causes the injury accident, injured passengers may file a claim against the bus company to seek compensation. In such cases, victims may seek medical expenses, loss of earnings and other related damages. It is important to understand that bus companies, whether it's a public carrier or a private company, are responsible to its passengers for their safe transportation.
Bus companies owe their passengers the highest "duty of care," even more than the negligence duty owed by the bus company to drivers of other vehicles or pedestrians. A knowledgeable Los Angeles personal injury attorney will be able to guide victims through these complex issues and legal processes and make sure that they are fairly compensated for their injuries, damages and loss.
