A 63-year-old woman who was killed in a San Francisco car accident has been identified as Xiu Fang Huang. The San Francisco Examiner reports that the woman was walking across the street at Ocean and Miramar avenues the afternoon of February 9, 2010 when a city Public Utilities Commission truck hit her. The fatal pedestrian accident occurred as the truck was trying to make a left turn on Ocean. Huang was pronounced dead at the scene. Separate investigations are being conducted into this incident by both the police and the commission.
I offer my deepest sympathies to everyone who knew and loved this woman. My heart goes out to her family and friends for their tragic loss. They will be in my prayers.
San Francisco Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Two months ago, a group called Transportation for America released a study, which showed that 27 percent of all traffic accident fatalities in the San Francisco region (including Oakland and Fremont), involved pedestrian accidents. In 2008, pedestrian accidents claimed 72 lives in San Francisco. That number was up from 64 in 2007.
What Caused this Accident?
If the details in this news report are accurate, it seems that Huang was crossing the street at the intersection. However, we do not know who had the right-of-way in this case. Police have received different accounts from eyewitnesses, which makes the investigation all the more challenging.
An Experienced Injury Lawyer Can Help
Huang's family would be well-advised to contact a reputed San Francisco personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all facets of this incident and make sure that the negligent parties are held liable. If there was negligence on the part of the truck driver, Huang's family will be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the city. California law requires that any claim against a governmental agency be filed within six months of the accident or injury.
